Overview of BSE at VISTEC

The Graduate program in Biomolecular Science and Engineering (BSE) at the School of Biomolecular Science and Engineering at Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology (VISTEC) focuses on emerging technology areas at the interface of biological and biophysical chemistry, cell and molecular biology, and chemical and process engineering. Emerging technology areas that will be flagship programs at BSE, VISTEC, include enzyme engineering, biocatalysis, synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, biosensor and biodevices. Our goals are to develop biomolecular tools and technologies to contribute to Thailand’s bioindustry and innovation in the areas of biorefinery, biofuels, functional materials, smart biosensors and biomedical detection. We expect that our program will help create green, environmental-friendly and sustainable technology for the country.

Our research programs will develop technologies directed towards industrial applications. Students and post-doctoral researchers at BSE, VISTEC will work in collaboration with the private sector, and encouraged to undertake entrepreneurship pursuits and training.

Training in both science and engineering. 

The BSE program at VISTEC is uniquely designed to provide students with insights into the frontiers of science as well as the corresponding technical and engineering applications. We believe that while it is important to make new discoveries, researchers should also be cognizant of the potential uses of these discoveries, and challenges in turning them into real applications. In this uniquely designed program, students will learn cutting-edge science and up-to-date technologies currently deployed in industries. Innovative research programs with high application impact. 
Research at BSE, VISTEC, focuses on exciting emerging and frontier technology areas such as synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, enzyme engineering, biocatalysis, biosensor and biodevices. Students will participate in the development of biomolecular tools and technologies that will make a real impact on the future of Thai Bioindustry.  For example, our research in the areas of biorefinery, biofuel and biocatalysis will enable Thai industries to move towards clean, environmental-friendly and sustainable production methods. Our smart biosensors and biomedical detection research will lead to innovations in the fields of health and quality of life.  

World-Class facilities 

With strong commitment and support from PTT Public Company Limited’s endowment fund, BSE at VISTEC is building world-class research laboratories and facilities to enable students and researchers to perform advanced research in Biomolecular Science and Engineering. World-class infrastructure and equipment for studying biological and biophysical systems as well as modern tools for analysis and engineering will help reduce time from idea to results. Students and researchers can thus maximize their pursuits of research and discovery. 

Accomplished faculty members 

Four members of BSE at VISTEC are full professors. All faculty members are academically and professionally accomplished. They are passionate about research and regularly publish papers in leading journals of their fields. They are recognized nationally and internationally as leading researchers in their fields. Faculty members lead their own independent research initiatives, and also pool their complementary expertise for collegial collaboration among the groups.

International experience

All Ph.D. students at BSE, VISTEC will receive scholarships to conduct research at a university overseas for a period of one year. Our faculty members have extensive collaborations with professors at world-class universities abroad. Students will start their projects in Thailand and proceed abroad for working with collaborators and gaining international exposure. 

 All teaching materials at BSE, VISTEC are of international standards, and all teaching is conducted in English.

BSE, VISTEC alumni can expect careers as researchers in industry, entrepreneurs in bio-tech startups and principal investigators/lecturers in academia. Students who perform well in academic coursework, excel in research, and want to work with the Thai industry will have good prospects of securing employment with PTT and its group companies. 

Full scholarship and support

All students at BSE, VISTEC will receive full scholarship support including tuition, stipend and free accommodation. Students in M.Sc. programs will receive full support for 2 years. Ph.D. students entering from M.Sc. will receive support for 3 years, and those entering from B.Sc. will for 5 years. All Ph.D. students will receive support to conduct research abroad for one year.

Safe and green campus life 

Situated in verdant countryside, students studying and working at VISTEC will enjoy high quality and safe campus life. Our campus is under 24/7 security surveillance to guarantee student safety. Each student will receive a bicycle for healthy and safe transportation on campus. Chemicals and laboratory wastes are 100% registered for maximum safety.

Free transportation to Bangkok, Rayong town, and Pattaya are provided every weekend. Reservations are required.

Who can Apply? 

For Ph.D. program
1.Students in the final year at the bachelor level, or holding a B.Sc. degree (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Physics and related areas), B. Eng. (Chemical, Biological, Environmental, Mechanical and related areas) or a bachelor degree in applied sciences such as pharmacy, medical technology and related areas. Minimum GPA of 3.50 is required (Students with GPA below 3.5 may apply with permission from Program Director.)

2. Students in the final year at the master degree level, or holding an M.Sc. degree (Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Molecular Biology or related areas) or M. Eng. (Chemical, Biological, Environmental, Mechanical and related areas) or a master degree in applied sciences such as pharmacy, medical technology and related areas. Students should hold excellent academic record or have published graduate research in international journals.

For M. Eng. program

Students in the final year at the bachelor level, or holding a B.Sc. degree (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Physics and related areas), B. Eng. (Chemical, Biological, Environmental, Mechanical and related areas) or a bachelor degree in applied sciences such as pharmacy, medical technology and related areas. Minimum GPA of 3.00 is required (Students with GPA below 3.0 may apply with permission from Program Director.)
